The Potter Group

About Us

Our legacy

Founder and executive chairman Derrick Potter started the Group as a one-man enterprise in Yorkshire back in 1965. Today the business employs close to 250 staff and has the land, resources, expertise and assets to support considerable further growth.

The fledgling business started by serving the buoyant agricultural sector with clients such as ICI and British Sugar. As new potential markets emerged, the Group grasped the opportunity to reach new sectors with acquisitions of land and other businesses, bringing in prestige clients including Cadbury, London Brick and Black and Decker.

During the past two decades the Group has taken up the cause of rail freight as a viable alternative to increasing road congestion and pollution. Continued investment in the infrastructure of its three rail-connected centres illustrates its long-term commitment to rail freight.

Group values

While the Group's business model has evolved, the core values of the business have not changed – towards clients, employees, suppliers or the world at large.

Rather than trying to sell what the business has to offer, the Group has always focused on supplying what the market and clients need, creating a number of successful and mutually beneficial long-term partnerships. This has translated into a high quality, professional service underpinned by honesty, respect and openness on all sides.

The Potter Group also supports a number of charities including Yorkshire Cancer Research, The Salvation Army, several youth support schemes such as Henshaws College, and most recently Transaid.
